International Students

Catholic means universal

SMC gladly welcomes international students who achieve eligibility for study in the United States by following the steps below.  For more comprehensive information, see the official US government site here.

1. Take the TOEFL exam

Proficiency in the English language must be demonstrated by achieving a minimum total score of 80, with minimum scores of 19 for each section.

See the ETS website for more details and to register for the exam.

2. Apply to SMC

Begin the application process.  Go here to begin the process.

3. Provide Evidence of Financial Ability

International students are required by law to supply financial evidence showing that they have sufficient funds secured to cover tuition and living expenses for a minimum of one year.

For information, see Study in the States.

4. Apply for Your Student VISA

Once your application packet, Evidence of Financial Ability, and TOEFL scores have been received, we will consider you for enrollment.  If you are accepted, you will be issued an I-20 form.  This document will allow you to apply for a student VISA once you have paid the I-901 SEVIS fee at FMJFee.com.

5. Carefully Time your Arrival

VERY IMPORTANT: Students are not allowed to arrive in the US more than 30 days before the program starts. At SMC, the dormitories open during the last week in August so you should not arrive in the US before August 1st. Be prepared to show your VISA and Form I-20 to U.S. Customs and Border Protection at the port of entry.

6. Maintaining Your F-1 Status

To retain their student status, international students must take a full course of study and not work without prior authorization while studying in the United States. Please contact the College Registrar [785-437-2471, ext. 422 or [email protected].] if you have any questions or concerns about maintaining lawful status.
