MUS 101 is the first half of a yearlong study of the history of Western music (continued in MUS 102). Through lecture, reading, and listening assignments centered on A History of Western Music, students will study major works and styles from Antiquity through the Early Baroque. Special emphasis will be given to Gregorian chant and liturgical music, the development of polyphony, Renaissance sacred and secular traditions, the Protestant revolt and Catholic Counter-Reformation, and the emergence of opera.
