Dr. Louis Shwartz

Biography

A love for Catholic culture and medieval traditions inspires Dr. Louis Shwartz’ interdisciplinary approach to teaching and research. Particular areas of interest include scholastic theology, canon law, medieval political theory, and religious institutions such as early universities and the Franciscan and Dominican orders. Literature, art, and architecture also figure prominently in his history courses here at Saint Mary’s College.

Dr. Shwartz’ publications include articles in leading academic journals (edited by institutions such as Cambridge University and the Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies), critical editions of scholastic theological treatises, and, with Tim Gresham, a four-volume high school textbook series.

Born in New Orleans, Dr. Shwartz has lived abroad in Europe and has studied at the U.S. Naval Academy, Vanderbilt University (B.A.), St. Thomas Aquinas Seminary, Western Michigan University (M.A.), and the University of Toronto (Ph.D.) before moving to Kansas in 2015. He has taught a variety of college courses, ranging from Latin to Medieval Literature to Early Modern History, collaborating with over 500 unique undergraduate students. In addition to these academic adventures, his wife and seven children keep him very busy, and very happy.
